Cross Section
an exhibition by Artist in Residence Niklas Dorsch
AlterWork Studios is pleased to present an exhibition by Artist in Residence Niklas Dorsch, “Cross Section”.
Opening Reception: Friday, November 6, 2026 | 6-8PM
This exhibition is on view everyday from 12PM-9PM from 11/2/26 until 11/14/26.
A cross section reveals the many parts that are inside of something. Made with oil paint, wood relief and ceramic, the paintings in Cross Section lay open houses, a power station and a neighborhood. Inside are frozen moments that carry a sense of unease and whimsy. Imagined memories, primarily from childhood summers in Germany, populate a space that lives between remembered and invented. In the paintings, the uncertainties of today are transformed into naive scenes that can more easily be cross-examined. Multiple memories are enshrined alongside one another, making it possible to trace connections between events and unsettle the chronological order of memory as a whole.
AlterWork Studios is located on the Ground Floor of 40-20 22nd Street, Long Island City, NY 11101. We are located on the west side of 22nd street between 40th and 41st avenues. When arriving, use the black touch screen to the left of the door to ring for AlterWork Studios in the Directory. Once inside, the studio is located down the stairs on the left.
Niklas Dorsch is a figurative oil painter based in Brooklyn exploring memory, identity, and the psychological weight of places we half-remember. Inspired by childhood summers in his grandparents' German village and influenced by Expressionism, he creates densely layered interiors with expressionist figuration and compositionally grounded landscape scenes. He is currently developing Village Moment, an ongoing series depicting a fictional village frozen in time. At AlterWork Studios, he plans to advance the series and develop new conceptual directions while engaging with the artist community.
