“Smile on 3”

 Smile on 3: An exhibition exploring the dynamic medium of portrait photography.

Portraiture has the capacity to tell multiple stories, traversing a wide range of themes and perspectives. Once rooted in rigid, formal documentation reserved for the privileged, it has evolved into a dynamic and expressive practice that reflects both artist and subject. Contemporary works move beyond standardized poses to explore concepts of identity, representation, cultural iconography, and social commentary. The diversity of subjects and settings affords portraiture the space to convey layered narratives, challenge societal norms, amplify marginalized voices, and continually redefine the boundaries of self-expression.

“Smile on 3” is curated by Tina Stipanovic & Tim Kelly.

We encourage submissions of any portrait photography; special consideration will be given to submissions that use traditional analog methods. Artists in any stage of their career will be considered. Please read the guidelines below for submission details.

Guidelines:

  • Artwork must be original.

  • Artwork must be finished at time of submission.

  • Artwork that requires hanging must be ready to hang. Specific installation instructions and materials should be included. If work is framed, frames should not extend more than 2” from the artwork’s edge.

  • This opportunity is free (no entry or hanging fee).

  • Individual Jpegs must not exceed 2mb.

  • If work is sold, AlterWork Studios retains 30% of the sale price with 70% going to the artist. Sales will be finalized at the end of the exhibition (it is not required that artwork be for sale; please indicate “not for sale” in submission).

  • Artists are responsible for the drop-off and pick-up of artwork. Artwork can be mailed to AlterWork Studios and must be accompanied by a return shipping label. Please note the quick turn around time between the notification date and the drop-off window.

  • AlterWork Studios reserves the right to disqualify any delivered work that differs substantially from the online submission, does not meet guidelines, or is not in exhibition-ready form.

Please submit up to 5 images; include title, year, dimension, material, and price along with submissions and embed the title in jpeg to tim@alterworkstudios.com. Please include “Smile” in the subject line.
