Instructor: Olja Stipanovic
Duration: 5 Weeks
Skill level: All Levels
Saturdays, 11am - 2pm
First Session: January 10th
Last Session: February 7th
This introduction to oil painting provides students with an opportunity to explore and understand this challenging medium. In this course we will engage with basic techniques involved with the practice of oil painting. Students will become familiar with a variety of methods, color, surface, space, and volume compositions, explore a range of oil color specific challenges and processes through painting from a figure model. Techniques include underpainting, oil sketching, glazes, direct painting and finishing with varied textural applications of paint. Great emphasis is placed on artistic process and technical skill building.
Session # 1 - Similar to a"cooking show" format - Instructor will model and demo how to prime a canvas. We will discuss traditional [rabbit skin glue/chalk and modern acrylic gesso sizing, tinted vs. un-tinted, the best ways to stretch fabric, how much fabric to leave on sides, sizing techniques (if using oil primer), grisaille palette, terra cotta toner. Students will learn all steps to prepare their canvas and surfaces for painting. Students will prepare their canvas for upcoming classes [Stretcher size should not exceed 30” in any direction]
Session # 2 – On their stretched and prepared canvases, students will start a portrait [from photos or self portrait - mirrors provided]. We will address composition and space relationships. Over the composition construction sketch, students will block in basic values with raw umber and white [creating an underpainting] We will discuss the importance of value over color and try a value study, grisaille, sepia and other underpainting techniques.
Session# 3 - Students will again work on the same portrait but with a limited palette (earth yellows, mars violet, bone black). We will further discuss color/value relationships, introduce the idea of edge solution and relating the form to the background. Creating tones, washes, glazes and mixing colors will be discussed. We will learn how to pace your painting process and when to step away or return to an area.
Session #4 - Students will work on their portrait painting with a full palette, refining forms, relation of form to the background, texture, etc. We will discuss glazing, layering, transparencies and the chemistry of building an oil painting.
Session # 5 - Students will learn about finishing an oil painting and finalizing the media. We will explore the use of varnishes and dryers. Students will finalize their portraits.
We will end the class with an art crit analyzing our work, summarizing best practices, recipes, and possible next directions and next step in building from the basics towards a more individualized work in oil painting.
